The first “green” cruise line in the world.
Costa was the first company in the world to receive the “Green Star”, an important certification for compliance with the highest environmental standards, for its entire fleet. It attests that none of the ships damage the environment and that they contribute to keeping the air and the sea clean. Costa’s fleet is also the only cruise fleet to fly an Italian flag, and is thus the only one to be subject to the more restrictive environmental and health laws of the European Union.
Environmental certification.
Costa Cruises is the only cruise line in Italy to have an environmental management system developed according to the UNI EN ISO 14001/2004 standard. It has developed an integrated system of voluntary certification that attests the responsiveness of our product and of our company with the highest international standards in terms of social accountability (SA 8000), safety (OHSAS 18001), and quality (UNI EN ISO 9001) recognized by the Italian Naval Registry (RINA) with B.E.S.T. 4 (Business Excellence Sustainable Task) certification). www.rina.org
Together with WWF to protect the sea.
Since July 2005 Costa Cruises and WWF Italy have been working together for the protection and preservation of the sea. By 2009 this important partnership will be dedicated to a project to protect the Mediterranean Sea www.wwf.it
In the frontline to protect Venice.
The Company has also signed the “Venice Blue Flag” voluntary agreement for the protection of the environment in Venice, and thus pledges to adopt environmental measures over and above those required by law for all its ships calling at the city.
A firm commitment to the Mediterranean.
Further evidence of Costa’s commitment to the environment is the project launched in 2005 in collaboration with the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre to monitor climate change in the Mediterranean. Automated monitoring stations have been installed on board some Costa ships to check the climate change study models formulated by the Centre’s scientists to improve the European Commission’s policies on air pollution from the open sea.
Sharing our results.
Costa Cruises is the only European cruise line that publishes a Social Environmental Report, a document drawn up voluntarily that attests the company’s concrete commitment to the environment and social accountability. The last report showed important results, including a 15% reduction in the consumption of water supplies, a 10% drop in waste produced and an 18% increase in recycled waste, along with the company’s participation in many cultural and social ventures. The Report can be consulted on the website www.costacruise.com
